Since the 1980s, the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation has established collaborations with other coastal wetland areas around the world which emphasizes the global responsibility of the Cooperation for the protection and conservation of tidal mud flats worldwide. The inclusion of the Wadden Sea on the UNESCO World Heritage List underlines this responsibility.
